Located in Florida Bay, 2 miles northwest of the Lignum Vitae Channel Bridge.

The entire group is named Townsends on the DeBrahm chart (1772). So named on U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey chart #1250 of 1937.

The center key of this group of three is named Bowlegs Key, probably after the Indian chief Billy Bowlegs.
