Located six miles SE of East Cape of the mainland Cape Sable area.
Reference
AlaƱa chart (1743) shows Cayo de Aji (SP - Pepper Key). O-Carrol chart (1770) shows Cayo Agies. DeBrahm chart (1772) shows Bradshaw. Romans (1774) shows the legend, "Cayo Axi - Now Sandy Key" . Gauld chart (1775) shows Cayo Axi. Gerdes, in his Reconnaissance (1849) states: "Cayo Axi is called Sandy Key. Shown on a reconnaissance map of south Florida drawn in the 1850's as Pepper Key.
