Geographic Location
Located three miles northwest of Sugarloaf Key.
Reference
Named Great Palmetto Island on the charts of both Gauld (1775) and Blunt (1846). Gerdes, in his "Reconnaissance of the Florida Reefs and all the Keys" (1849) states, "Great Palmetto Id. is called Johnsons Id." Charles Torrey Simpson's "In Lower Florida Wilds" (1920) contains a chart which shows Johnsons Key.
