U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey chart, "Big Spanish and Knight Key Channels And Approaches " published in 1889, shows Lemon Key at this location, as does #168, "Florida Reefs, Long Key to Newfound Harbor Key" (1863).

A field report written for the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey in 1935-36 states: " West Bahia Honda Key is also known as Little Bahia Honda Key and East Bahia Honda Key is known as Big Bahia Honda Key. In order to avoid confusion with the Bahia Honda Key along the railroad the names East and West are recommended for continuance on the chart."
