Located 1.5 miles north of U.S. Highway 1 between Boca Chica Key and Stock Island.

So named on U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey chart #169 (1878).

Gerdes, in his journal for the years 1848-49 states: "This island is situated N.E. from the town of Key West and appeared before approaching it more elevated than the rest. For want of a proper name it was called Channel Island."
