Ashby Island
Geographic Location
Located between the western end of Upper Matecumbe Key and Shell Key (II).
Scope Note
A small, horseshoe-shaped island located between the western end of Upper Matecumbe Key and Shell Key (II). According to Mr. Walter (Buck) Starck, who has resided at the upper end of Lower Matecumbe for many years, it is named for Edward Ashby, who lived there from shortly after WWII until the late 1950's. Also known locally as Horseshoe Key because of its shape.
