Cayo Caguamas
Scope Note
Almost without exception, Spanish charts of the
17th & 18th centuries show a key by this name to
the oceanside of the Big Pine group, in the area
of modern Key Lois. One of the 1733 plate fleet
charts shows Cagubamas.
The 1765 chart drawn by Juan Elixio de la Puente
shows Cayo Caguamas.
Romans (1773) shows Caguma in the Newfound Harbor
area.
J.W. Norie, in his Piloting Directions for the
Gulf of Florida the Bahama Bank & Islands (1828)
states: "About 4 miles N 1/2 W from Looe Kay -
there is a small harbour, called by the Providence
people New-Found Harbour, and by the Spaniards
Caguamos or Cayovamo."
