Cayo Canalete on O'Carrol chart (1770). Unnamed on DeBrahm chart (1771) Cayo Canalette on Gauld chart (1775). J.W. Norie, in his Piloting Directions for the Gulf of Florida,The Bahama Bank & Islands states: "Cayo Canalette, which lies about a mile to the northward of it (Key West)." Gerdes, in his "Reconnaissance of the Florida Reefs and All the Keys" (1849) states: "The Cinalette Ids. N. of Key West Town are called the Mangrove Ids." He further states that these islands bear N.E. 12 degrees from the Key West Lightship.
Scope Note
Canalete - SP. A single or double ended canoe paddle made of palm. This key, which is shown just north of Key West on all the above charts, still exists, but is unnamed on modern charts. See Fleming's Key.
