Stock Island

Scope Note:

Supposedly named for herds of livestock formerly kept here. Alternatively, some local historians suggest that it may be named for an early settler.

Geographic Location:

U.S. Highway 1 crosses key at approximately mile markers 4--6, immediately east of Key West.

U.S. Coast Survey Sheet #291, (1850) "Key West, Stock Island. & Adjacent Keys" so names the key. So named on U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey chart #169 (1878).
