Located to the bayside of the western end of Upper Matecumbe, northeast of Lignum Vitae Key.

Gerdes, in a report from his 1849 survey, states: "The Key N.E. of Lignum Vitae Kay is named Shoal Key." In his journal for 1848-49, Gerdes corrects the name to Shell Key. So named on U.S. Coast Survey preliminary chart #69 (1863), "The Florida Reefs The Elbow to Lower Matecumbe Key".
