Ramrod Key

Scope Note:

 

Named for the (British?) ship Ramrod, which was wrecked on a reef south of here in the early nineteenth century.

Geographic Location:

 

U.S. Highway 1 crosses key at approximately mile markers 26--27.5, east of Little Torch Key.

Roberts Island on DeBrahm chart (1772). The 1861 Bache Coast Survey shows Ramrod Key. A survey map drawn by Charles Smith in 1872 shows Ramrod Key. So named on U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey Chart #169 (1878).
