Scope Note:

The site of a commercially-operated breeding colony of Rhesus monkeys.

Geographic Location:

Located in Florida Bay, 3.5 miles north of Cudjoe Key.

A survey map drawn by Charles Smith in 1873 shows Raccoon Keys. Charles Torrey Simpson's "ln Lower Florida Wilds" (1920) contains a chart which so names this key. So named on U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey Chart #1251 (1932).
