- On Gauld chart (1775), a small key, at the location of the easternmost of these keys, is named Sand Key. So named (in pencil) on Blunt chart (1846). Gerdes, in his "Reconnaissance of the Florida Reefs and all the Keys" (1849) states: "The next (island) to the S. W. (of Pigeon Key) is called the Molasses Key."
