- Jenkyns
- Jenning's Island
- Jenyns Island
- Old Road
Scope Note:
- This name may be much earlier than previously believed. An article published in the Georgia Gazette of Apr. 8, 1790 states: "On the 16th day after they were wrecked (the Sloop Sally) they arrived at Old Road, near Key Largo."
Geographic Location:
- Located in lower Biscayne Bay just north of Broad Creek.
References:
- J.W. Norie, in his "Piloting Directions for the Gulf of Florida, the Bahama Banks, & Islands" (1828) states: "Between Jenning's Kay and Elliot's Kay is an inlet, named Black Caesar's Creek." This precise locating of Jenning's Key can only be today's Old Rhodes Key. The Gerdes survey (1849) has Old Rhodes Key.
