Called Ridgley's Key in a U.S. Army report (with map) from 1857, during operations against the Seminoles. Mentioned as Joe Kemp's Key in a 1916 journal written by John Kunkle Small,"The Cruise of the Barbee". A map published in Charles Torrey Simpson's " In Lower Florida Wilds" (1920) shows Joe Kemp's Key.
