Earlier name:

Commonly referred to:

Julia Island

Scope Note:

Called Sound Point by Bernard Romans in 1774, who said that this was the true location of Cape Florida. This Key was the site of an early agricultural settlement. John Lee Williams, in his "Territory of Florida" (1838), calls this key Sound Island or Sound Key: "Sound Island lies in front of Tavernier Creek; The extreme ends are called North and South Sound Points. Behind these points are harbors sufficient to shelter the wrecking vessels, Sound Key has no fresh water." According to sources, the name El Radabob is a modern one, created as follows: The family of Mr. Radford Crane possesed large real estate holdings on Key Largo and donated Julia Island at the time Pennekamp Park was being created. The Island was renamed to honor members of the Crane family: Ellen Crane, Radford Crane Jr., David Crane, and Bob Crane.
