Visited by John James Audubon in 1831. Today this is the only one of the Mule Keys which is known by this name.

Located immediately to the west of Key West.

Gerdes (1849) states: "The Eastern island (of the Mule Keys) is called North Crawfish Key." U.S. Coast Survey Chart of 1855, "Key West Harbor and its Approaches" shows East Crawfish Key. The U.S. Coast Survey Sketch F of 1860 shows East Crawfish Key at this location. U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey Chart #1251 (1932) shows East Crawfish Key.
