Sawyer Key

Gerdes, in his "Reconnaissance of the Florida Reefs and All the Keys" refers to Cudjoes Island. There can be little doubt that he was referring to Sawyer Key, as further on in his work, he states, "(The) Islands in line with Cudjoes and North Harbor Key (Upper Harbor Key)-(are the) Content Keys." The site of a former settlement, whose cisterns and foundation remains are visible at low tide.

Located in Florida Bay on the western edge of Cudjoe Channel.

Gerdes, in his "Reconnaissance of the Florida Reefs and All the Keys" (1849) states: "2 miles north of E. Johnson Island lies Cudjoes Island." A survey map drawn by Charles Smith in 1873 shows Sawyer's Key. U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey chart #169 (1878) shows Sawyer's Key.
