Wisteria Island
Commonly referred to:
- Christmas Tree Island
Scope Note:
- Named for the harbor quarantine ship Wisteria which was moored here. She sank in the hurricane of 1919 on Frankfort Bank in an upright position, and the hulk was used for many years for various activities. The hulk burned in 1933, leaving only the iron hull. When Key West Harbor was dredged the hull was covered over with the fill, creating a new island which became known by the ship's name, Wisteria. Portions of the hull can still be seen extending from the south end of the island. Also known as Christmas Tree Island, because of the large Casuarina/Australian Pines growing here.
Geographic Location:
- Located just off Key West, north of Tank Island.
