According to a field report written in 1935-36 for the U. S. Coast & Geodetic Survey, "The northerly key on this bank (Buttonwood Strips) is called locally Cutoe Key - origin obscure. Pronounced Coo-toe."

Geographic Location:

 

Located in Florida Bay, on the western side of Spanish Channel, six miles north of U.S. Highway 1.
