Romans (1774) shows the legend, "Cayo Axi - Now Sandy Key." Gauld chart (1775) shows Cayo Axi. Gerdes, in his "Reconnaissance of the Florida Reefs and all the Keys" (1849) states: "Cayo Axi is called Sandy Key. Shown on a reconnaissance map of south Florida drawn in the 1850's as Pepper Key.
